Considering the Elliots' obsession with social standing and their constant belittling of Anne, how does this dysfunctional family dynamic actively hinder Anne's happiness and agency throughout "Persuasion," and what specific choices do they make that contribute to this?

Their preoccupation with status certainly casts a long shadow. The constant reminders of my perceived insignificance, particularly from Elizabeth and my father, Sir Walter, limit my opportunities and curtail my spirits. Their insistence on propriety over genuine affection, as was the case with Captain Wentworth, has undeniably shaped a life of regret.

It is a great misfortune for Anne, no doubt, to be so afflicted with sensibility. However, I must confess that the family's regard for its position is quite justified. Had Anne possessed a stronger sense of decorum, she might have avoided the unfortunate connection with Captain Wentworth and the subsequent regret she harbors.
